SMOKING MAN
A playful, character-driven pencil sharpener designed to reframe an everyday desk object through humor and interaction.
The project explores how figurative form and functional mechanisms can coexist, using exaggeration and narrative to create an engaging yet practical product for daily use.
Making everyday tasks just a bit more enjoyable.
Making everyday tasks just a bit more enjoyable.
Life is not just about catching up, but also about small happiness
An idea from…
The concept originated from observing casual social moments—friends smoking, standing, and interacting in exaggerated postures.
Rather than replicating these scenes literally, the design abstracts them into simplified geometry and proportion, allowing the object to remain functional while expressing personality.
The internal mechanism was designed to prioritize usability and cleanliness. A removable base tray collects pencil shavings, allowing for easy maintenance without disrupting the character-driven form.
The separation between the sharpening mechanism and the collection compartment ensures stable operation while keeping the desk environment tidy..
But….. It’s Convenient Shavings Collection
Also, Creative and Eye-Catching Design
The product was modeled in Fusion 360, focusing on part separation, assembly logic, and tolerance awareness.
The design considers manufacturing feasibility for small-scale production, balancing form complexity with functional reliability.
This project reinforced my interest in combining expressive form with everyday functionality. While the character-driven approach adds humor, the primary challenge was maintaining usability and cleanliness—an exercise that strengthened my understanding of functional constraints within playful design.
